All about mums

This week is dedicated to all things mummy. With Mother’s Day approaching this Sunday, March 10, I have been doing some research to help you find your mother the perfect gift. I always find it impossible to find something for my mum, as the unfortunate thing is, she is a dedicated follower of fashion (you now know where I get it from), so, similar to her daughter, her tastes are particular, and she already has quite the selection of clothes in her wardrobe from working in retail. That said, she is usually very good at hinting to my sister and me as to what she is lacking, and would like for Mothering Sunday. If you need some inspiration this week, I hope these ideas will give you a helping hand.

Here comes the bride

You might think that it is just a little early to talk weddings but there is no time like the present to get ready for being a bride or a guest. In the last three years I have been to nearly 20 weddings, all of which were great fun. But having an outfit ready for each and every one was just a little bit of a challenge.

Oh, it is my favourite time of the year, when I am perched on a stool at a high table in the press room at London Fashion Week. The atmosphere is electric, the stars are in the front row, and the bloggers (including me) have their cameras at the ready to take shots of the best fashion on show, both on and off the catwalk. More so than ever, next season’s offerings are something to get excited about, with some key trends being clear from the get go. I have had my favourites, and so here is all you need to know.

November is upon us and doing a wardrobe clear out is not just limited to spring. This week I took part in a great initiative called Fashion Fall Out, held in Dublin where the country’s most recognised faces in fashion and independent boutiques brought some pre-owned (and some new) pieces for a very exciting public sale. From vintage to designer bargains, there was something for everyone on offer. The rail sale idea is gaining momentum across the country and in the times we are in, the benefits are limitless. The seller makes some money and the buyer can find the most wonderful fashion treasures.

I would like to thank…

The Emmys, aka the Oscars of the small screen, took place in LA earlier this week. Now I am not one to stay up until the crack of dawn checking out all the red carpet glam, or lack thereof, but the red carpet arrivals of this particular ceremony caught my eye. Selecting a best dressed list is never an easy task, especially when there are aspects of a look that are superb and others that are mediocre. This year's Emmys were certainly a stylish affair, for both the girls and boys, and may spark some colourful new trends. So who wins my award for the best dressed?

Down to a T

Of all the catwalk trends, celebrity influences and High Street offerings, if I was to pick my favourite item of all time, it would be a t-shirt. Plain and simple. It’s a core item that no wardrobe should be without. You may think that there are plenty of items that should form part of your capsule closet but think of it like this. Blazer and jeans, leggings and sneakers, summer skirt and sandals, no matter what the outfit, the basis of all of the aforementioned, is a t-shirt. Now I’m not talking about a top emblazoned with your favourite 1980s rock band (although I have a brilliant one with Debbie Harry on it) my advice is to keep it plain this summer and stick to styles such as a fitted cotton “v” or round neck, sleeveless or cap sleeved, waist or hip length. The simplicity of the T is what makes it genius. To get you summer ready, there are lot’s of ways to style up the minimalist, most unadorned of all fashion staples.

If I ever won an award (preferably an Oscar) I would make sure I wore the mother of all ball gowns, bring the red carpet to a standstill, pose for the paps until my cheeks hurt and blow kisses at the adoring crowd. Well I can dream, right? Award season is well underway; the Golden Globes set the bar for exquisite style from Michelle Williams and Charlize Theron, the SAG awards let Angelina have her moment in Jenny Packham and the BAFTAs this week brought the black evening dress back to the fore. That said, celebrities do have the choice of every gown known to man; but not to worry, there are plenty of formal dresses making an appearance this season and at really affordable prices.

Looking ahead

You may think that looking ahead to Spring is a little premature considering we are amidst a cold winter, but the fashion industry always works one season in advance. I am a regular London Fashion Week attendee and back in September I found it hard to decipher Spring/Summer 2012 trends, when we hadn’t even hit Winter. But that’s the way the industry works and the challenge for a journalist is to predict what’s coming. Christmas may be in the air, however, the fashion media start to preview upcoming collections as early as October. And so over the last week, I have had Spring in my step!
